What is the OutStanding Music Association?
Founded in 2024, OutStanding Music Associaion is a Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to advancing 2SLGBTQIA+ artists and music industry professionals through advocacy, industry development, education, and community-building. Our mission is to help shape a more equitable, innovative, and culturally vibrant Canadian music industry where 2SLGBTQIA+ creatives are empowered to build sustainable careers, access leadership opportunities, and thrive authentically.
Why OutStanding Music?
Through our ongoing research and outreach with key populations, we have learned that while the Canadian music sector has developed important support structures for several underrepresented communities through organizations such as Women in Music Canada, Indigenous Music Office, and ADVANCE Music Canada, there remains no national organization dedicated specifically to the advancement and advocacy of 2SLGBTQIA+ music professionals.
Because of this, queer and trans artists and industry workers continue to face systemic barriers to access, visibility, mentorship, and career advancement. Informal industry networks and traditional gatekeeping structures often limit meaningful participation in decision-making spaces, funding opportunities, and professional development pathways.
OutStanding Music is positioned to help address these gaps by creating strategic connection points between artists, industry leaders, organizations, and emerging professionals. Through targeted programming, industry partnerships, mentorship opportunities, advocacy initiatives, and community-informed research, we aim to strengthen representation and long-term retention of 2SLGBTQIA+ artists and industry professionals across the Canadian music ecosystem.
Inclusivity and Representation:
We champion a music industry where 2SLGBTQIA+ artists and professionals are prominently represented and celebrated. We are committed to ensuring that diverse voices and stories are heard and valued in all aspects of the industry.
Equity and Justice:
We advocate for equitable opportunities and fair treatment for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals in the music industry. Our goal is to dismantle barriers, challenge discrimination, and promote justice and fairness at every level of the industry.
Empowerment and Support:
We provide resources, mentorship, and support to empower 2SLGBTQIA+ artists and industry professionals. We are dedicated to fostering an environment where creativity thrives, and every individual can achieve their full potential.
Education and Awareness:
We strive to raise awareness and educate the music industry and the public about the unique experiences and contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals. We believe that understanding and empathy are crucial for creating a more inclusive and supportive environment.
Collaboration and Community:
We build and nurture a strong, supportive community within the music industry, fostering collaboration and solidarity among 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and allies. Together, we work towards a more vibrant, diverse, and inclusive music landscape.
